Crush or Flush that hottie

Seattle P.I.,  John Cook  January 16, 2007

Here's an appropriate name for a mobile dating service. It's called Crush or Flush and it is the latest project from Bellevue-based IceBreaker Inc.

Backed by angel investors and Lightspeed Venture Partners, the startup describes itself as the first dating application for the cell phone. Bloggers have already dubbed it Hot or Not for the mobile phone.

Here's a quick audio description from the company's Web site, which includes this classic line: "Tag a hottie and they are crushed, find a not-so hottie and they are flushed. Fun, easy, free."

Do you think Craig McCaw envisioned this would be the future of cell phones when he started McCaw Cellular?

IceBreaker is led by former Microsofties Michael Robinson, Eric Hennings and Josh Levine.

A number of companies -- including Seattle startups Mixxer and Treemo -- are attempting to build social networking into the mobile universe. Crush or Flush is a new entrant in that category, though its entire focus at this time appears to be hooking people up through the power of mobile phones.

GigaOm had a good overview of IceBreaker back in November, writing that Hot or Not founder James Hong was impressed with the service.

UPDATE: I just heard back from IceBreaker's Josh Levine who tells me that the company has thousands of users from its private trial last November, with visitors spending on average of 20 minutes per session. Levine, who declined to disclose the company's financing total, said they have a trial ongoing with one wireless carrier and negotiations continuing with three others.
